Carpet freshener

As well as removing any stale or unpleasant smells from carpets and rugs around the house, the essential oils in this vacuum powder will add a calming and relaxing scent wherever it is used.

10 drops lemon essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

125g/41⁄2oz/1 cup baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)

  1. Place the baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) in a container with a lid. Add the essential oils and mix well.
  2. Cover and leave overnight, so that the baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) fully absorbs the oil.
  3. To use, sprinkle the mixture generously over the carpet or rug, then vacuum up the powder.


The acidic properties in lemon juice means it is perfect for cutting through dirt, grease and grime in many different areas of the home.

Surface cleaner

Use lemon essential oil to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces, as its limonene is a solvent that removes greasy marks as well as alcohol does.

Grease be gone

Remove greasy marks from surfaces by applying lemon juice, then rinsing off with a damp cloth.

Limescale treatment

To remove limescale from around a plughole or tap, rub with the cut end of half a lemon, then rinse.

Window cleaner

To clean windows, rub the cut surfaces of a lemon quarter over the glass, wipe off with a damp cloth, then dry with a dry cloth.

Grout whitener

Use an old toothbrush dipped in lemon juice to clean grout between kitchen or bathroom tiles.

Barbecue cleaner

Remove caked-on food residue from barbecue grills and grates with a mixture of lemon juice and salt.

Washing up booster

Add a few drops of lemon juice to washing-up liquid to increase its degreasing properties.

Descaler for kettles and coffee pots

Remove scaly build up inside kettles and coffee pots by adding a few lemon slices to the water and boiling. Once boiled, allow the lemon water to cool down and sit for 1–2 hours, before rinsing out with clean water.

Quick floor cleaner

Add 4 tablespoons of white vinegar and 10 drops of lemon essential oil to a bucket of water and mop the floor with this scented solution.
